Around January 2015, MCResolver, an IP-resolver service popular within the Minecraft community that mapped player usernames to the IP addresses they had connected from, suffered a data breach exposing roughly 13 million username-to-IP records (approximately 2.45 million distinct usernames). The exposed data contained Minecraft usernames paired with IP addresses, and for many records the reverse-DNS hostnames of those IP addresses; no passwords, email addresses or payment information were included. Such resolver data enables privacy harms and targeted DDoS attacks against players. The dataset was later distributed on a hacking forum and subsequently redistributed via Telegram.
