About This Breach

Sometime in 2019, the gaming forum Battle Royale Forums experienced a data breach affecting 51.7k users. The compromised data included usernames, email addresses, and passwords stored as bcrypt and salted MD5 hashes. The hacker explained on a post on a popular hacking forum that the attack stemmed from a successful exploitation of The Walking Dead Forums. After obtaining the forum’s database from a now defunct hacking forum and cracking an admin's password hash, they were able to access other related forums owned by the same individuals. This incident underscores the critical need for robust cybersecurity practices, especially in ensuring unique and strong passwords across platforms to prevent cross-site vulnerabilities.
