About This Breach
In January 2021, Astoria Company, a US-based lead generation and marketing firm, suffered a data breach after attackers exploited misconfigurations in its lead-management systems and exfiltrated data that was subsequently distributed on a hacking forum. The exposed records originated from the company's lead ping/post transaction logs and contained personal information submitted by consumers through loan and insurance lead applications, including email addresses, first and last names, phone numbers, IP addresses, dates of birth, physical addresses and, in some records, Social Security numbers. The breach was reported to affect approximately 11.5 million unique email addresses. Astoria initially downplayed the incident before later notifying affected consumers.
