About This Breach

In January 2021, Oxfam Australia experienced a data breach that exposed the personal information of 1.8 million supporters. The compromised data, which was initially put up for sale on a popular hacking forum, included email addresses, names, phone numbers, addresses, genders, and dates of birth. For some individuals, partial credit card data (first 6 and last 3 digits, card type, and expiry date), along with bank details like the bank name, account number, and BSB, were also exposed. The data was later made freely available on the hacking forum the following month. This incident underscores the importance of robust cybersecurity measures, particularly for nonprofit organizations handling sensitive donor information, as breaches can have serious repercussions on both privacy and trust.
