About This Breach
In April 2016, a database containing the personal records of nearly 50 million Turkish citizens was leaked and widely distributed online. The data, believed to originate from Turkey's central civil registration system (MERNIS) and dating to approximately 2008-2009, exposed national identification numbers (TC Kimlik No), full names, parents' first names, dates of birth, gender and full residential addresses including city, district and neighbourhood. One of the largest exposures of government-held personal data of its time, the records were published as a downloadable PostgreSQL database and subsequently circulated through hacking forums and Telegram channels.
